Google and Life Magazine have published a huge library of images on the Web. Very fun to look at scenes from days gone by. I was struck more than once by recurring themes; things that are important to us now were important to us then. This picture of a couple riding their bicycles in 1942 sort of makes you feel hopeful, doesn’t it? Of course, you have to wonder if they would be out there riding if they had had access to more than 3 gallons of gasoline per week!
A little time has gone by and the storm in the teapot over the recent legalization of bicycles on the Fulton Mall is beginning to blow over. So far as I can tell, it’s been much ado about nothing. Legal or not, people have been riding on the mall for a long time. So let’s all just get along now, little doggies, and ride on down to the Fulton Mall. I’m going there for lunch! The Downtown Association seems resigned to the situation as well, and it is there that I find this list of common-sense guidelines, should you find you need an external force to regulate your behavior:
- Pedestrians have the right-of-way.
- Safe, responsible bicycle riding is essential.
- A maximum speed limit of 10 m.p.h. is enforced.
- No bicycles are allowed at sanctioned pedestrian mall events.
- Police officers have discretion to determine appropriate bicycle conduct.
- These guidelines apply to wheelchairs.
I think we missed the $5 lunch on Fridays special, but there is a wide variety of restaurants to fit almost any budget/palate combination. See you there!
