Hello Friends,

The weather report informs me that there is an 80% chance of rain
tomorrow, so that makes this event less than certain, because rain
cancels.

However, won't you join us? The Fresno County Bicycle Coalition will
be riding from the south-east corner of Blackstone and Shaw at 11:00
AM tomorrow. We plan to travel up the lightly-trafficked Blackstone
Avenue to the completely deserted parking lot of the Target store in
River Park.

If you like, you can meet us there. ETA 11:30 AM or so.

We're going to play frisbee in the empty parking lot for a while.
Bring toys that will amuse you. Then we'll ride to Woodward Park for a
visit to the San Joaquin River, where the fun will continue for a
while before we all ride back down Blackstone to the start.

Dress appropriately, think about using lights in case it rains, bring
snacks to share, leave an itinerary with a loved one, and look both
ways before you cross the street. Call me with questions or to confirm
that the ride is on.

Tentative route:

It’s the coldest, darkest month of the year here in Fresno California. It takes a tad more willpower to saddle up and ride out when it’s pitch dark outside, and cold and foggy to boot. And when it’s not foggy, it might be rainy. December is well into the Rainy Season here too.

But fear not, intrepid bicycle rider! You are not alone, and the rewards, as usual, make it all worth while. So let’s all get educated and re-motivated by reading this excellent post on the Bikeology Blog. If Edmonton, Alberta, Canada can ride in the rain, then so can we, by gum!

I read in the Fresno Bee this morning that the City of Fresno is taking the covers off a handy new online system that will let you reserve a picnic table without “having” to drive to City Hall. Now, I know you’re wondering how this ties in to bicycling, but follow along. The system was paid for by a $93,000 grant from the Air District. The goal is to reduce car trips. Fewer car trips, of course, means fewer cars on the road and more room for us. So let’s support the system, to encourage the City and other agencies to continue investing in reducing car traffic.  Next time they might get a grant for something more directly related to bicycling. In the mean time, start planning your next bicycle picnic in the park now!
