RECENT FACILITIES APPROVED BY FRESNO CITY COUNCIL

On February 15, 2005, the Fresno City Council approved fifteen new street, traffic signal, and trail projects.  These projects will be 88.53% federally-funded with a required 11.47% local match.  Four of the projects are bicycle related:

1.  Bike lanes and bike route signage on "H" Street, Palm Ave to Merced St:

-         total cost:  $134,900

-         construction:  2005

The bike lanes will extend from Divisadero St. to Merced St.  Between Palm Ave and Divisadero St, "H" Street will be designated as a bike route.  The original plan was to have the bike lanes extend all the way from Palm Ave to Merced St., however, Assistant City Manager Jon Ruiz deleted the bike lanes between Palm and Divisadero because on-street parking would have been eliminated.  Between Divisadero and Merced, "H" Street is being totally re-striped so as to install the bike lanes without eliminating on-street parking.

2.  Herndon Canal Trail:

-         total cost:  $686,000

-         construction:  2006

This project will construct a trail along the south side of the Herndon Canal from the corner of Shields and Blackstone Avenues to the point where the canal crosses Van Ness Blvd.  The project includes the paved trail itself and associated features such as a fence between the trail and the canal and landscaping and irrigation system.  The local trail advocates refer to this project as the Bankside Trail.  They desire to see the trail extend all the way to the corner of Ashlan and West Avenues.

3.  Pedestrian Signal at intersection of Peach Avenue and McKenzie Trail

-         total cost:  $145,000

-         construction:  2007

The McKenzie Trail is located in southeast Fresno.  It is 3 - 4 blocks south of Belmont Avenue and runs from Clovis Avenue to Willow Avenue.  In 2004 the city received a federal grant to rehabilitate the trail which has not been maintained for many years.  This project will install a pedestrian-activated traffic signal at Peach Ave to improve safety not only for trail users but also for school children crossing Peach Ave.

4.  Sugar Pine Trail Underpass at N. Fresno Street

-         total cost:  $965,000

-         construction:  2006

The Sugar Pine Trail is a very successful trail in northeast Fresno north of Herndon Avenue.  It is the continuation into Fresno of the Clovis Old Town Trail which has underpasses at Willow, Nees, Minnewawa, and Herndon Avenues.  These underpasses greatly contribute to the utility and safety of the trail.  This new underpass will be on N. Fresno Street about a 1/4 mile north of Nees Ave.  It will eliminate the at-grade un-signalized mid-block crosswalk across this busy four lane street.
