June 2019

Bike Month Wrap Up

Bike Month began with the well-attended Mall to Hall Ride on May 1 and concluded with the celebratory Bike Prom on May 31.  In between were bicycle education events, Grizzly Fest with bike valet, the Ride of Silence, and Bike to Work Day with an Employer Challenge.

Bike to Work Day

For the first time ever, Bike to Work Day was rescheduled due to wet weather.  Bike to Work Day was originally scheduled for Thursday, May 16, a day before National Bike to Work Day, which is typically held on a Friday.  Because many people take Fridays off as part of an alternative work schedule, the Central Valley Bike to Work Day is normally scheduled earlier in the week.  There was wild weather throughout May, and the local Bike to Work Day was rescheduled to Friday because of a wet forecast. It was a good thing because there were downpours on the 16th. There was glorious riding weather on the 17th, though a few people were off work that day and did not get to participate.  FCBC set up the traditional energy station at the Tower Theater.

Bike Prom

More than 30 people participated in the Bike Prom, which began with a bike ride from Fresno High to the Cultural Arts District then to Gazebo Gardens, for a festive night with food and music.

Bicycle Education

FCBC distributed bike helmets and lights at a child safety fair held at the Marketplace at El Paseo on June 1.  Then on June 8, FCBC conducted a kid’s bike rodeo at Steven’s Bicycles in Clovis. Another bike rodeo will be held at Steven’s Bicycles in August before the start of school.

Next Board Meeting

The FCBC Board will be meeting on Thursday, June 20 at the Ted C. Wills Community Center on Thursday, June 20 at 5:30 p.m.  We will be debriefing Bike Month and talking about plans for the remainder of the year. Everyone is welcome to attend.
