December 2022

Last month was particularly busy for FCBC with numerous events in what is normally a quiet month.  Read more about that below and see what else is being planned for the rest of the year.

In this month’s Newsletter:

  • Bike Café is on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm with a meet and greet with Southern Sierra Cyclists from the Visalia area.

  • The next Bike Station Fix Your Own Bike Event is on Saturday, December 17 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm in the Tower District.

  • The World Day of Remembrance was on November 20, and a proclamation took place at Fresno City Hall on November 17.

  • FCBC Board elections are open and will close at the next general membership meeting on Thursday, December 15 at 7:30 pm.

FCBC Bike Café

The monthly virtual Bike Café allows FCBC members and others to socialize and discuss bike-related topics of interest.

FCBC will be hosting the Southern Sierra Cyclists from the Visalia area for a meet and greet on Tuesday, December 13 at 7:00 pm on Zoom.  Discussion topics include a debrief of the recent Smart Cycling class held online and in-person in Visalia, the LCI Seminar and other bicycle education efforts, the planning for the regional Bike Summit to be held in Fresno next year, and a general get to know each other better and learn what type of events we both do.

Fresno Bike Station

FCBC member Edna Pedroza has created a whimsical new logo for The Bicycle Station, and it captures the joy and freedom of being able to repair your own bike.  The next Fix Your Own Bike event is scheduled forSaturday, December 17 between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Van Ness Village Vendor Fair, located at 1440 N. Van Ness Avenue.  The BikeStation is sponsored by FCBC and allows bike owners to learn how to repair their own bikes with help from experienced mechanics, including FCBC member Julie Congi and Tower Velo owner Chris Eacock.

Fresno World Day of Remembrance Events

On November 17, the Fresno City Council issued a proclamation for World Day of Remembrance to pay homage to all of the people across the world who have lost their lives or have been seriously injured while on the road.  In attendance were several current and former Fresno Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee members, including Joe Martinez, whose 21-year-old son Paul was struck and killed by a speeding vehicle while crossing the street.  Joe is now Board President of California Walks.

Above, from left to right, are former Fresno BPAC members Susan Smith and Gabe Lozano, current BPAC member Sean Zweifler, Councilmember Tyler Maxwell, current BPAC members Laura Gromis and Matthew Woodward, Councilmember Mike Karbassi, and former BPAC members Joe Martinez and Tony Molina.

The World Day of Remembrance was on November 20, and there was a memorial bike ride in Downtown Fresno and a vigil procession walk to the Fresno Water Tower with a remembrance ceremonial lighting.

Visalia Smart Cycling Class

In November, FCBC conducted the first uncondensed Smart Cycling class since the beginning of the pandemic.  The two-part class included a three-hour Part I virtual classroom instruction and five-hour Part II on-bike handling skills in Visalia in collaboration with Southern Sierra Cyclists, with the goal of developing additional League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) in the Central Valley by bringing an LCI Seminar to the Central Valley.  The LCI Seminar includes 23 hours of instruction over three days and is taught by LCI Coaches.  An LCI Seminar can be scheduled if there are at least 8 qualified paying participants.

For those who missed attending the virtual classroom session, that portion of the Smart Cycling class can be done online by viewing videos on the League of American Bicyclists website and taking the exam online.  FCBC is looking to offer additional virtual and/or in-person Smart Cycling classes in Fresno next year.  Completion of a Smart Cycling course is a prerequisite for attending an LCI Seminar.

Helmet Giveaway at Fashion Fair on November 18

FCBC Chair Tony Molina participated in a National Injury Prevention Month event organized by Safe Kids Central California at Fashion Fair Mall on November 18 to give away bike helmets.  Please keep children safe by making sure that they always wear a properly fitted helmet while riding their bikes.

FCBC Board Elections and Next General Membership Meeting

Voting is open for the FCBC Board member elections up until the general membership meeting on December 15 at 7:30 pm via Zoom.  All current FCBC members should have received online voting instructions, and results of the election will be announced at the meeting.

Everyone is welcome to join the virtual meeting.  The traditional in-person meeting at an eatery and group ride through Candy Cane Lane by Railroad Park in Clovis will not take place this year to protect the health of the members with the rising spread of multiple viruses.  If you would like to participate in the meeting, register here, and you will immediately get the Zoom link.
