We’re excited to have Justin Turner here to talk about his new Slowest Locals ride in Fresno. Join us for a presentation and discussion about this cool new ride. Let’s give Jason a warm welcome!
Bio:
My name is Justin Turner and since May of this year I’ve been coordinating a bi-weekly bike ride that takes place in the Tower district. I’ve been cycling since I was a kid and when I moved to San Francisco in 2010 I was introduced to fixed gear/track bicycles and the fixed gear community. I was astonished by the customization that was available with such a simple bike setup, and the community of riders able and willing to help if you needed. I recently moved back to Fresno in late 2023 and very quickly found a similar community of cyclists here in the Tower district. Meeting this community was one of the best things that’s happened to me and I’ve wanted to give back any way I could. I noticed that there were consistent rides happening throughout the city for intermediate or advanced cyclists but there wasn’t much going on for beginners or casual cyclists. The idea for the slow ride was given traction by two of my close friends who are avid in the Fresno cycling community, without their help this wouldn’t have taken form, and on May 19th we went out on our first slow ride with over 60 participants. Wanting to incorporate supporting local businesses as well we ride to various businesses around the Tower/Downtown area, exploring our community along the way. We’ve been graciously given discounts for our helmet wearers by the businesses we’ve visited, encouraging safe riding habits. It’s been really incredible meeting new people and seeing friendships form between our cyclists, and we look forward to keeping this Sunday slow ride consistent and safe for all.
